Provincial funding of $650,000 for the multi-use indoor turf facility has been denied to Thunder Bay.
However, Mayor Bill Mauro points out the city’s cost of the facility did not include this money, so the price tag does not change without this money.
He adds this will not affect the cost to build it, as this funding source, from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, was simply one of many the city had applied for concerning many projects.
“We’re looking currently into one we had discussions with two weeks ago. As an example, with the federal government, I was on the phone with their federal bureaucrats, related to a funding stream that looks like it might be a possibility that could help with the Conservatory,” says the Mayor.
He adds city hall went on the assumption it would not receive this money.
The Mayor is again reassuring this application was one of many made to the province and federal governments. “We will have up to two years, still, to try and secure additional funding for this project, from the provincial and federal governments.”
