We could see extension of the waterfront walkway begin, by a kilometre a year.
At-large city councillor Aldo Ruberto will present a motion Monday night, which would ask for a report from city administration indicating if this is possible, which he doesn’t see why not.
“Every city I go to when I travel, and I’m sure whenever people go to Toronto, or Winnipeg, or wherever they go, there’s always accessibility at the waterfront… and it’s a multi-purpose trail,” says the councillor.
He hopes in about five to six years it’ll extend, from Fisherman’s wharf, and picking up where it left off from, currently at the south end near the boat launch. “Want to take it all the way to either Chippewa Park, or Fort William Historical Park. Both places would be ideal, with people always walking. That’s the number one activity people do in the city, and with the population getting older, that’s one of the nicest things to do.”
The city councillor points out tax money could fund this, or fundraising, private donations, or any other means of financing.
It’s been an idea for Thunder Bay since 2006, before Ruberto was elected.
“We were talking about this multi-purpose trail all along the waterfront, because everybody even back then understood that the best thing you could do for the least amount of money, and get the best bang for your buck, is do a multi-purpose trail along the waterfront,” says the councillor.
