City Considers Adding By-law Officers

More by-law officers could patrol the city’s streets in the future.

City Council agreed to look at hiring more officers, which Councillor Aldo Ruberto says will let them change how the city approaches by-law enforcement.

“We are reactive. In other words, people have to phone us to say ‘hey, this is happening.’ We should be proactive, so maybe we’ll have the man-power to be proactive instead of reactive,” Ruberto said.

He said this would also take pressure off police who spend time responding to by-law violations after hours, and the by-law department itself.

“I know that [by-law officers are], not behind, but they’re overwhelmed with the number of cases,” Ruberto pointed out.

We can expect a report on hiring by-law officers to come back by the end of November.

Meanwhile, Ruberto was going to present Council with a request to look at by-laws to tackle drug trafficking. That was delayed, and will come forward August 10th.
