Masks Now Mandatory In Thunder Bay

Better make sure you have a mask ready if you plan on going shopping.

As of today wearing a mask in indoor public spaces is mandatory in the Thunder Bay district after the Health Unit called for the order as the region moves into Stage 3 of reopening the economy.

Frequently visited places such as the grocery store and retail locations are covered in the new rule, but not offices where the public does not frequent as often and sometimes requires an appointment.

Thunder Bay’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janet DeMille points out with more people allowed into public spaces, there is a greater chance the virus can spread.

Mayor Bill Mauro supports the decision, since a second wave of COVID-19 is expected, possibly in the fall, and this simply gives the region an extra layer of protection.

Canada’s Health Minister Patty Hajdu told Acadia Broadcasting’s John Ongaro she doesn’t think this decision is too late. She points out even though the amount of the virus in this area is very low, it doesn’t hurt to have an extra layer of protection. However, she admits masks cannot be relied on solely to stop COVID-19, so maintaining physical distancing, handwashing, and all the other safety measures are needed.
