Restrictions On Backyard Fireworks Possible

If you enjoy backyard fireworks, you may have to cut back in the future.

City Council voted to look at updating its by-law around fireworks, which could include limiting how late you can set them off, how many days before and after an official holiday, and how loud they can be.

It could also change when you are allowed to buy fireworks.

Councillor Aldo Ruberto adds the noise distresses pets and people with post-traumatic stress disorder, and can be disruptive if the celebrations go on too long.

“People go to sleep around 2 o’clock in the morning, the fireworks continue to around 4 o’clock, even on days when we’re not celebrating. It has gotten out of hand,” says the councillor.

Right now the city lets you light fireworks three days before and after holidays, but that period could be shortened.
