Businesses Hopeful Closure Will Boost Traffic

Some downtown businesses hope the partial road closure on Red River Road will bring in more customers.

The westbound lane of Red River Road is closed between Court and St. Paul Streets for the rest of the summer for the Waterfront StrEATery.

Kevin Heerema is a server at the Foundry and says they’ve been fully booked since they re-opened, and appreciate the picnic tables that have been set up.

“People that we couldn’t previously seat, now they’ve got a place to sit if they want to get something to take out,” he points out. “I think it’ll definitely help.”

Aaron Parilla owns Milktease, a bubble tea shop that opened its Red River Road location early this year. He hopes the StrEATery gets a lot of attention.

“I think people are going to love it once they know it’s here,” Parilla says.

City Council is allowing business districts like the Waterfront District BIA to apply for this type of partial street closure. It’s meant to bring more customers to businesses that were forced to close because of the pandemic.
