It’s been three months since the provincial government first declared an emergency for the province.
Premier Doug Ford says they’ve learned a lot in that time.
“Everyone has learned across the country, just amazing how everyone has come together. Businesses, people, our front line emergency folks stepped up and came together as a team,” Ford said.
Earlier today, Ford extended the emergency orders to June 30th. A provincial state of emergency was first declared March 17th.
Public and private gatherings will remain capped at 10 and bars and restaurants won’t be able to open for indoor service.
The provincial government highlighted today some of the data collected during the pandemic including how Ontario now has a total of 21,425 acute care beds and 3,276 critical care beds, 2,583 of which are equipped with ventilators. During the peak of the outbreak, the system freed up between 5,000 and 6,000 acute care beds, and had preparedness plans in place to go up to 11,000 acute care beds if needed.
Ontario now has a network of over 30 laboratories to ramp up the province’s testing capacity, starting at about 3,000 per day in March to reaching over 20,000 a day in recent weeks.
