A huge sigh of relief for workers at Thunder Bay’s Bombardier plant with more work lasting roughly another year.
Dave Black is the plant’s general manager, and tells us the plant will start building 28 rail cars for a transit authority in Seattle, Washington, worth about $108-million US.
“We just completed an order for them back in 2018. Now they’re needing more cars, it’s not a huge order, but it does sustain us for a little bit longer, and this just adds to their existing fleet,” says Black.
The local plant manager adds this customer has chosen Thunder Bay to make the entire vehicle, having worked together in the past.
“We have a good working relationship, they’re quite happy with the vehicles, they get them on time, and they perform well. The bi-level car is a very successful car, and the team here in Thunder Bay has done a remarkable job,” credits the plant manager.
He says the work will start in January.
“After we finish the existing GO contract. So we are building bi-level cars today for Toronto, and this will follow right behind it. It’s not a huge order, but we can sustain a work force,” says Black.
The company adds there is an option to build another 33 vehicles.
