Video: Community Rallies Around Family Of Slain Girl

Current River residents are showing the family of slain teenager Kayleigh Ivall their support by putting lit candles in the front windows of their homes.

Kayleigh’s body was found Monday afternoon in the area of Arundel Street near Lyon Boulevard. She was last seen the night before in the area of Claude Garton school. Police have not made an arrest in the case.

Tammy Hall lives near the family, and tells us since she feels the area isn’t as safe as it used to be, she doesn’t like her twin daughters going out.

“What even gets me more is a good, close friend of mine, has a daughter that was best friends with Kayleigh, and she took it really, really hard, because Kayleigh was one of those kids that she could actually depend on to talk to,” says the Current River resident.

She adds she put up three candles.

“The tall one represents the recent tragedy that has happened in this neighbourhood. It’s for Kayleigh, she was 14. And I have five kids, and two of them are 13 years old,” says the local mother.

The former Fort William resident adds she left one for another murder in the area, as well as a fire which gutted her family home recently.

Bill Graham lives on Hodder Avenue, and tells us he doesn’t know the family personally, but he had to take part in the Facebook initiative.

“Current River is a tight little community around here. I’ve lived here since I was a kid, at different locations. My parents still live in Current River,” says the local resident.

Mark Dowton left a candle lit Saturday night and his Canadian flag at half mast, noting how far reaching this tragedy is.

“On the Facebook page it shows people lighting candles in Edmonton, Ottawa, St. Catharines, and many other places,” adds the Current River resident.

Kayleigh’s father told our newsroom how thankful he is for the support, which includes plenty of food dropped off from many people. He adds ever since the shrine of his daughter went up outside the family home, it has grown with the number of flowers and notes as people drop them off anonymously while he is busy answering a backlog of emails or doing errands.
