MPP Receives Assurance On Mine Opening

With over a dozen workers at the Lac des Iles mine testing positive for COVID-19 there were concerns by a Thunder Bay MPP.

Micheal Gravelle thought the operations north of Thunder Bay would get back underway April 28th but was assured by the company that would not happen.

“I was pleased to learn from the CEO of Impala Canada that indeed was not the case…the mine will remain on care and maintenance until further notice,” said the Liberal MPP.

About 170 mine workers are self isolating for two weeks at a Thunder Bay hotel to make sure they do not show coronavirus symptoms.

Gravelle added he “was concerned that based on the ending of the quarantine on April 28th there was some discussion about …reopening (the mine) on that date.”

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
