COVID-19 Case In Eabametoong

The COVID-19 is making its way into Eabametoong, also known as Fort Hope First Nation.

The Sioux Lookout Health Authority says the community is the first far-remote area to confirm its first case.

A statement from the Health Authority says it’s not surprising, considering the lack of resources in the north and overcrowding.

They say remote communities are at higher risk because the virus has been confirmed in Thunder Bay and Sioux Lookout, where many First Nation residents have to travel for services like medical appointments.

As a result, the COVID-19 Regional Response Team recommends limiting all non-essential travel in and out of communities.

The team and other health officials are moving to help Eabametoong Chief Harvey Yesno and the community members. That includes working with all levels of government to get necessary supplies for First Nation communities.
