Food Sector Loses 300,000 Jobs Due To Pandemic

Food service workers have been hit hard during the COVID-19 crisis.

A survey from the not-for-profit group Restaurants Canada found the food service sector lost more than 300,000 jobs last month.

Those findings gathered in late March are from 655 responses, representing 13,300 restaurant locations.

The results show that four out of five restaurants have laid off employees since March 1.

Around 70% say they will further cut back on staff hours or lay off more staff if conditions don’t improve.

The organization says it has been working with all levels of government to push for measures like rent relief for businesses, cash to help restaurants re-open, and easier access to wage subsidies.

Ontario restaurants have been ordered to shut down their dining rooms and can only offer take-out or delivery during the provincial State of Emergency.
