Contractor Still Not Sentenced On Fraud Charges

A local contractor who pleaded guilty in 2017 to a large amount of fraud-related charges is still waiting to be sentenced for his actions.

Richard Belbas appeared in court Monday and had his case put forward to May 1st.

In some of the instances, people responded to online ads for construction services and never saw their work completed.

The charges are in relation to jobs Belbas took on in 2013 and 2014, while others are more recent and are from when Belbas was out on probation in 2017.

Court heard Belbas is now on his third lawyer. His original legal representative was Christopher Watkins.

The latest on file was Francis Thatcher but he told the court that he wasn’t prepared to act as Belbas’ lawyer.

Karen Scullion is now looking after Belbas and was given just under 60 days to bring herself up to speed with his case.

She told the judge that her soon-to-be client understands that he is looking at many years in jail.

The judge in the matter told lawyers that he expects sentencing to take place on May 1st since the charges are getting dated.
