Mayor Hopeful For Bombardier Plant’s Future

Thunder Bay’s Mayor is keeping an eye on Alstom’s purchase of Bombardier’s rail division.

Bill Mauro thinks the deal announced Monday won’t change operations at the local plant right away.

“There’ll be a few steps that will be required. The European Union, it’s my understanding, will still have to approve this merger,” Mauro notes. Bombardier officials estimate the deal won’t be finalized until the first half of 2021.

He says city officials have their fingers crossed that this will be good for the plant’s employees and the city.

“We’re uncertain,” Mauro admits. “You hope something like this might end up being a positive news story for the community, but of course there’s always the possibility that it might not be.”

The Mayor adds the city will do what it can to “represent the interests” of the plant.
