The Office of the Fire Marshall confirms one man is dead after a north-side fire early Sunday morning.
Firefighters also found an unconscious woman and a deceased dog in the home on Machar Avenue between Cornwall Avenue and Bay.
Platoon Chief Harold Spithoff explains the call came in around 3:15 Sunday morning because of a couch fire producing heavy smoke. Spithoff says the fire was contained to one room on the main floor of the home and was quickly extinguished.
Huge emphasis is being put on the importance of working smoke alarms. Christiaan Ter Stege is with the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office, and says smoke alarms need to have fresh batteries. “You have less than three minutes to get out of your dwelling house, and if that smoke alarm is not working, you’re not getting out of that house. And in this case, I’m looking at the smoke alarms to determine if they’re a factor involved in this.”
Meanwhile at the Regional Hospital, firefighters are looking into a fire in the emergency room.
One person suffered burns and was treated at the hospital.
They were called out around six o’clock Saturday night, and hospital staff put the flames out before crews arrived.
The causes of both fires are under investigation.
