The City of Thunder Bay is going to examine the community’s energy use. This project, a community energy plan, was made possible through 2019 funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the provincial government’s municipal energy plan.
Sustainability Coordinator Amy Coomes tells us it will start with collecting information on just how much local companies and institutions are reliant on fossil-fuels. “Taking a look at everything from business, industry, corporate emissions, transportation, MPAC building assessments, MTO, to see where we are as a community and from there we will create a baseline and figure out what is our business as usual if we keep going.”
Coomes adds they’ll also look at a low carbon scenario and think of ways our community can lower our carbon impact. A public information session and movie screening of an environmental film is going to kick this initiative off on January 9th at Magnus Theater.
