Disappointing is how the Chamber of Commerce president views the decision by Lowe’s to close its store in Thunder Bay.
Charla Robinson suggests the closure may just be a sign of the times as the retail industry has been going through a transition for a couple of years. She believes it shows that not only have fashion stores been dealt a blow by online shopping, “but now it’s spreading to broader areas that perhaps felt a few years ago they might be safe.”
The chamber president admits she was surprised by Lowe’s announcement since she was not aware the challenges retailers faced extended to “something like a hardware store.”
Robinson hopes the closure will mean people will start shopping at locally owned hardware stores.
Lowe’s Canada announced today their ‘underperforming’ Thunder Bay store will close January 31st, 2020.
