Shelter House Now Accepting Wild Game

Shelter House now has a permanent wild game permit for their community kitchen.

Spokesperson Katie Watson says it means they will now be able to accept wild game meat as a donation.

“Previous to this application being approved, we could only accept frozen meats that were certified in a kitchen through the health unit. Now we can get it from hunters, and it doesn’t need to be inspected because we keep track of the donation on our end.”

Watson goes on to say, “we take it in, we have a very brief logging system that shows who the hunter is, how they donated and when. That way, we can keep track of it on our end, and we take accountability for it.”

The charity says this permit opens up a new world of possibilities for the food they can cook and serve.

Watson says volunteers are sure to enjoy cooking up some new dishes.

“We definitely want to make our kitchen and the food we serve as accessible and comforting as we can for the community we serve.

The volunteers that come in to cook these meals will be able to add some variety to their menus.

We’ve been cooking primarily with ground beef or chicken or pork if it’s donated.”
