Playgrounds Help Children With Medical Issues

Two Thunder Bay children diagnosed with rare conditions now have their own backyard playground thanks to a local real estate company.

Vince Mirabelli tells us his company organized it through Toronto based Million Dollar Smiles.

“It’s a wonderful group of 8 volunteers from Million Dollar Smiles that flew up, their core group. And, plus we have another 15-25 volunteers of ourselves on each site, and this is all sponsored through Million Dollar Smiles.”

Organizers add the playgrounds will help three year old Darius and 10-year old Lillian play at home since they can’t travel to a playground due to weak immune systems.

Lillian was diagnosed with severe Aplastic Anemia. Darius was diagnosed with Down Syndrome and NF2.

Anna Lopes is with Million Dollar Smiles, and says the playgrounds help during treatment.

“Especially when they’re going through treatment and their immune system is weak, and they can’t go to a regular park. They’re excited when they come home and see this big structure outside.”

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
