Mauro Hopeful For Long-Term Bombardier Work

Mayor Bill Mauro is speaking out about the layoffs announced at the local Bombardier plant.

In a statement released by the Mayor’s office, he says the plan to let go of half the local workforce in November will “dramatically impact” the economies of the city and the region.

He says the province has made a “clear” commitment to the Thunder Bay Bombardier facility when it told Metrolinx to negotiate the purchase of 36 more vehicles.

However, he admits even if that work is given to the local plant, “we recognize it to be a short term solution.”

Mauro once again emphasizes he feels it’s important to enforce Canadian content policies to make sure future mass transit work is given to Canadian companies like Bombardier.

He adds the city is committed to working with Bombardier’s management, along with the federal and provincial governments, to make sure the plant and the city have a successful future.
