Business Owners Thrilled With Grants

The owner of a Memorial Avenue furniture store is thrilled to be taking her business international, thanks to a $100,000 federal grant.

Celine Fisk runs The Design Studio, and tells us the money will propel her business years ahead by creating a website called crownandbirch.com.

“The cost associated with that can be quite high, in order to create a website, to populate it, the cost to hire a manager to market, and all of those things have been covered by this grant.”

The Design Studio is one of five northern Ontario businesses led by women that Labour Minister Patty Hajdu is handing $100,000 to.

“They would have had to demonstrate their capacity to manage the grant, submit their plans, in terms of how it would contribute to either the growth or sustaining of their particular business.”

The local MP adds this is from a $2-billion fund meant to help women business owners overcome obstacles.

Also, a Pass Lake woman who runs a farm raising organic products is quite happy with the money.

Marcelle Paulin tells us the money will help her expand the Sleepy G Farm.

“We’re going to be implementing a bulk storage and handling system for our root vegetables here at Sleepy G Farm. So, we’re going to be storing root vegetables and winter storage vegetables over the winter to be retailed to our members through local retailers.”
