Student Funding Cuts Felt Locally

The provincial government’s changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program are being felt locally.

Farhan Yousaf is the Vice-President of Operations & Finance at Lakehead University’s Student Union.

Yousaf tells us he’s heard students were shocked to see just how much money they will be getting through OSAP.

“Students were really unhappy with the cuts. It has a huge impact on Lakehead students for sure cause many our students rely on OSAP, and it’s going to impact their education.”

The VP of Operations and Finance at LUSU suggests some students are pondering whether they can afford to return to school in the fall.

Meanwhile, there isn’t a firm deadline for students to make up their minds on whether they will opt-out of certain university fees as allowed for by the provincial government.

Yousaf tells us they are working with the university on this issue and they don’t have a clear deadline for when students can opt-out.
