The United Way is no longer lifting people into the air on a lift for its Billboard Rescue.
Co-chair Andrew Richert tells us this Thursday, participants will instead make a collage at the IG building, showing what Thunder Bay means, while raising money to deal with issues such as poverty.
“And there are a lot of issues with social inequality, and we’re looking at the root causes of those. And we’re going to take all the money from our events, such as the Billboard event, and we’re going to put it back into those programs that can help solve those problems in our town.”
The campaign co-chair hopes the finished collage may be used on a billboard in Thunder Bay.
“Working with some of the folks, giving them a little bit of creative guidance, from Community Arts and Heritage project. So, if you’re not super talented, or don’t think you are, there’s people that are and can guide you in the right path. And you can build a collage of what you think Thunder Bay should be and what it represents to you.”
Richert tells us why lifting people high on a scissor lift is done after 25-plus years.
“Like anything else in town, it cycles out, we needed a change, something different, more vibrant, and we thought this could bring more people in, make it more inclusive, and again, let people show what Thunder Bay means to them.”
