City Mining Manager Supports Smelter Decision

The city’s mining services manager says it makes sense for Noront Resources to locate their chromite processing plant in Sault Ste. Marie.

John Mason says the Sault had an edge over Timmins.

“…having a location right on the Great Lakes, in a smelting community, right on the seaway is important for sure. Stainless steel mills in Pennsylvania and Ohio will be easily accessed off of the Great Lakes system.”

Sudbury and Thunder Bay were eliminated from the bidding process in July of 2018.

Mason still hopes they’ll be able to play a role in the Noront project.

“We hope to be involved in the development, construction, and operation of the mine and mill on-site.”
