Nipigon Mayor Excited About Economic Future

The Mayor of Nipigon sees a good future for the community, with projects like the East-West Tie power line on the horizon.

Richard Harvey explains they are also hoping they will see ground broken by the end of the summer for the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area.

It’s a project that’s been in the works for years, extending from the Sibley Peninsula to Bottle Point by Terrace Bay, and down to the American border.

He’s predicting it will be a big draw for visitors.

“Across the entire North Shore, but especially in Nipigon where we’ll be having the headquarters–both the administrative centre but also interpretive centre or visitors’ centre.”

Nipigon’s mayor adds they have already seen more tourists even before the administrative centre is built.

“We’re already seeing that. Even though there’s very little infrastructure, we haven’t seen a lot happening with actually getting it up and running–that’s starting now–but we see people coming just so that they can be there.”

Nipigon’s mayor expects making the North Shore into a conservation area will make it an international eco-tourism destination.
