UPDATE 8am: City Mostly Escapes Storm

Looking at the roads this morning, you can expect just a few centimetres of snow to deal with.

Just after 8 this morning, we were told of a crash on Fort William Road at the Walmart, and another at the corner of Valley Street and Masters.

A check of OPP shows no problems across the region.

The Ministry of Transportation is showing snow on Highway 11-17 north of the city and 61 from the city to the border, and it’ll be hard to see because of the blowing snow.

Highway 17 west of the city and Highway 102 are clear, but there is still some reduced visibility.

Snow plows are at work on those and other area highways.

Student Transportation Services say no buses are cancelled, but there may be delays for some routes because of the weather.

Environment Canada has cancelled its weather alert for the city, and it appears Thunder Bay has escaped the brunt of the latest shot from winter.

Meteorologist Rob Kuhn admits there was more snow further south and into Minnesota, but the city was spared.

“The heaviest part has moved through, and we’re going to just be getting what we call nuisance amounts of snow today and tonight. [We’re] looking at an additional amount of probably two to five centimetres across much of the area.”

The meteorologist admits the wind makes it difficult to measure the snow.

Weather officials recorded around six centimetres at the airport, but we are seeing much less in the city.
