Youth Facility Location Sparks Controversy

City councillor Brian McKinnon is coming out against the location of a proposed 60 unit facility for homeless Indigenous youth and those with addictions.

It will be built by Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services out of Sault Ste. Marie, and would be located on Junot Avenue next to the EMS headquarters,

That is an area McKinnon suggests is already notorious for drug and gang activity and would be located right by the Boys and Girls Club, along with an elementary school and high school.

McKinnon notes the residents living in the nearby Windsor and Blucher Street area “have been trying really, really hard to reclaim their neighbourhood” and make it “a positive place to live.”

He says “all of those factors suggest this isn’t the right spot for it.”

The ward councillor notes the issue will be discussed at a meeting on Thursday evening at the Boys and Girls Club.
