I’ve signed a lot of online petitions in my time. Some times the change happens, sometimes it doesn’t and I never REALLY know how much the petition I signed has effected the outcome. I feel better knowing that I’ve done something, even if it’s just filling out a form, to have my voice heard. Some of the petitions I’ve signed have been for big things, some have been for small but rarely have they made as much sense to me as this one!
I’ve visited Winnipeg a number of times since moving to Thunder Bay 16 years ago and I’ve never understood why the Disreali Freeway was a) named after a British Prime Minister (or perhaps it was named after Cream’s Disreali Gears album?) or b) called a Freeway when it’s really just an overpass…apparently I’m not the only one! A petition has been started on change.org to have the name of the Disreali Freeway changed to something that actually involves Winnipeg. The petition would reflect the name of two individuals who not only lived in Winnipeg but did more for the city in the last 50 years than a British Prime Minister from the 1800’s ever did. The individuals in question being Randy Bachman and Fred Turner, the leaders of the band Bachman-Turner Overdrive. The new name being proposed for the overpass? The Bachman-Turner Overpass!
Much like Paul Shaffer Drive and Bobby Curtola Drive, here in Thunder Bay, I think it’s a great way to celebrate the musical history of Winnipeg. And really…it’s both an incredibly obvious and an absolutely genius idea!
You can find the petition and add your name here!
