Who Hires The Next Mark Smith?

In forty plus days the current General Manager of Development and Emergency Services will ride off into the sunset.

Mark Smith’s last day with the corporation will be February 28th as City Manager Norm Gale unveiled one of the most senior and longest-serving members of the team will walk away for his duties.

While a more fulsome farewell will happen for Smith at his his final meeting next month, the question now becomes who picks his replacement.

Red River Ward councillor Brian McKinnon says the responsibility falls directly onto Mr. Gale

“We have one employee, and that’s Norm Gale. He’s the only person we hire,” says McKinnon. “So Norm will look at whether Mark is to be replaced, and I don’t mean that in a harsh manner. What Norm may do is look at re-allocating or redefining some positions, I don’t know. The other approach Norm Gale might take is this planning position is really important and we need a new person to take on the role.”

The City Manager is sorry to see Mark Smith go, but did say at Council Monday that he appreciated Mark’s experience, tutelage, confidence, unique insight, and witty aphorisms.
