Wabaseemoong On Standby For Evacuation

A wildfire may force the Wabaseemoong Independent Nations to evacuate.

Kenora Fire #51 is now listed at over 171,000 hectares in size.

Chief Waylon Scott says the fire could jump the lake by Tuesday.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says the blaze is about 20 kilometres north of the community and smoke from the forest fire is flowing into Kenora and the surrounding areas.

Chief Scott says they will have a grace period of 12 to 24 hours to fully evacuate the community.

There were four new fires in the region yesterday and 110 active forest fires.
