VIDEO: Extensive Damage In Marks St. South Fire

It looks like there was extensive damage in a house fire at a home on the city’s south side.

Two families, including two children and four adults, all made it safely out of the house on the 200 block of Marks Street South near Miles Street.

Tyrell Kowtiash was inside the house when the blaze broke out, telling us he was woken up by his neighbours yelling that there was a fire.

“My first response was just to get my daughter out of there,” he explains, adding that he tried to extinguish the fire himself, “Then I realized that it was way out of my hands,”

Platoon Chief Harold Spithoff says it seems the flames started in the front porch area, before spreading onto the outside of the home and possibly to the roof.

He says it’s too soon to say what might have started the fire.

Meanwhile, smoke from a grass fire in the Intercity area could be seen from the Waterfront this afternoon.

Firefighters were called to deal with a grass fire near the Main Street Bridge around 1:30. (Staff Photo/Video)
