The union that represents Thunder Bay transit drivers is speaking out against social media posting it says unfairly depicts its drivers, and paints a one sided story without having full context.
It all started last Thursday when a security guard at city hall was seen taking a picture of two homeless men, who seemed to be sleeping on a bench.
That picture was posted to Facebook, and indicated others nearby were laughing.
The City of Thunder Bay says this matter is under investigation, but also that additional security was added at city hall because of bus driver complaints of aggressive behaviour by some people.
The city adds photos are taken “on occasion” of repeat offenders in the event a trespassing notice needs to be issued against anyone.
Transit union president Fred Caputo says drivers are subject to increased verbal and physical abuse on a daily basis, leading many to become increasingly frustrated at the lack of support, but also concerned for their safety, and the safety of co-workers and passengers.
He adds recent social media postings show drivers are under greater public scrutiny, by those who take pictures and videos, and post to social media creating a narrative with little or no context of the full story. Caputo says this inaccurate and unfair portrayal of drivers has led many to avoid helping those in need out of concern they will be wrongfully accused on social media.
Not only is the union calling for more security to keep drivers and passengers safe, but also government funding for more addiction treatment facilities, as well as shelter and mental health supports it says are the only way to make a difference.
