The Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) is warning the public of two possible blue-green algae blooms in the region.
The first is at Abram Lake near Sioux Lookout and is currently being tested by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks. While the tests have not come back yet, the NWHU is asking people to treat it as though it is blue-green algae until further notice.
The second report is in the Bonny Bay Road area of Wabigoon Lake, and it has been confirmed in the north end of the lake.
Blue-green algae are microscopic organisms that are naturally present in lakes and streams. They are usually seen in low numbers but can rapidly increase in certain conditions producing more toxins.
The public is being asked to avoid drinking the water, swimming in it, or using it for bathing or other household purposes.
Boiling the water is also not ideal as it can increase toxin levels.
It is recommended to wait at least two weeks after the bloom has disappeared before resuming normal use of the water.
If you spot a bloom, report it to the Spills Action Centre at 1-866-MOETIPS (6638477)
