A big boost for the Fort William First Nation and the efforts to start up a volunteer fire service.
Fire Prevention Officer William Solomon tells us it comes as the result of a donation of two fire trucks and equipment worth between $400,000 to $450,000. It was given to them by the organization Firefighters Without Borders.
“I’ve been following them on Facebook actually, and then I contacted the Ontario rep for the organization and just through chitchatting and talking we ended up receiving this large donation,” says Solomon.
The fire prevention officer agrees the donation goes a long way to helping the community set up its own volunteer fire service.
The next steps are to getting government funding and erect the fire hall on Mission Road next to the First Nations arena and then they will make a call-out “for volunteers to start training.”
Once the service is up and running Solomon says they will be in a position to get to any fire in the community within four to seven minutes.
