Canada is proposing the first ever national carbon pricing system.
It will start $10 per tonne by 2018 then going up by $10 a year until it reaches $50 per tonne by 2022.
In making the announcement Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the provinces are expected to follow suit.
He says provinces and territories will have a choice as to how they want to implement the proposal. Either by putting a price on carbon pollution directly or by introducing a cap and trade system.
Trudeau says any province which doesn’t have a system in place by 2018 will have one imposed on them by his government. (File photo)
