Truck Route By-Law Returns This Month

The Designated Truck Route By-law is coming to City Council for debate this month.

Council heard last night that it will be brought forward on June 22nd.

It will be just over a year since Council last voted on the Truck Route by-law, after they approved the route itself last March.

It would re-direct heavy truck traffic from Dawson Road and West Arthur Street onto Highway 11/17.

The by-law has been delayed multiple times, as the City Clerk has been directed to find a date where all Councillors could attend.

It was supposed to come before Council in October 2019. At that time, the additions for Councillors to debate included allowing drivers to complete multiple deliveries inside the city without returning to the truck route after each drop-off.

The revised by-law also would allow the owner of a heavy truck to be charged if the driver breaks the rules, which staff said will encourage obeying the by-law.

It made more exceptions for city vehicles that are over the weight restrictions but have to do work outside of the truck route.

Even if Council approves the updated by-law, there will be more steps before it’s finalized.
