Thunder Bay is finishing up its North Core Streetscape Project on Red River Road, right on time for the return of an old annual event in the city.
The project focused on Red River Road and Court Street.
Infrastructure has been replaced, and the roadways have also been improved with wider sidewalks, a curbless street design, new lighting, decorative paving, and ongoing public art installations.
Dedicated patio and seating areas have also been built.
“This is more than just a construction project, it’s about creating a downtown that people are proud of and want to spend time in,” said Senior Project Engineer Brian Newman. “The new north core is a welcoming, accessible space that supports our local businesses, reflects our cultural identity, and gives residents a beautiful place to gather year-round.”
The new design allows for flexible use of the space, with Red River Road able to close to traffic to host festivals, markets, and community events.
“We are happy the city has laid the groundwork for a street that puts public space at the forefront,” said Executive Director of The Waterfront District BIA, Kara Pratt. “We invite everyone to come down to enjoy the views, the vibrant spaces that have been created, and be inspired to fall even more in love with our city.”
The construction project is wrapping up at the perfect time ahead of the return of Harbourfest.
The community event from the 1990s is returning, marking the full reopening and completion of work on Red River Road.
Hosted by the Waterfront District BIA, the event will feature live music, games, contests, local vendors, a dog contest, and a fashion show.
