Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra selects finalists for new artistic director role

The Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra (TBSO) has announced it is launching a two-year search for its next artistic director.

The organization is moving into its 65th performing season.

The search comes as the organization transitions away from utilizing a music director, instead shifting to the new director role.

The organization says it has conducted an extensive international search leading to the selection of nine conductors to move forward to the final stage of consideration.

Each of the finalists will conduct a Masterworks performance with the TBSO over the next two seasons.

The auditions are a part of a community-engaged audition process according to the TBSO.

The finalists are:

  • Evan Mitchell,
  • Geneviève Leclair,
  • Alexander Prior,
  • Benoit Gauthier,
  • Martin MacDonald,
  • William Rowson,
  • Francisco Hernández Bolaños,
  • Trevor Wilson,
  • Jaelem Bhate

The candidates will be introduced to the community through concerts, public events, and educational opportunities.

Audience members will be invited to participate in the selection process by providing feedback and engaging in discussions about the values you are looking for in the next artistic director.

“This is an important and inspiring moment in the history of the TBSO,” says Executive Director Ryleigh Dupuis. “We are welcoming nine visionary artists to share their music, their ideas, and their leadership with us.”

“As we plan for our future, we are also asking our community to help guide us in selecting the right person to lead the orchestra into its next chapter.”

More information about the Masterworks Series and the appearance scheduled for each candidate is expected in the coming weeks.
