Thunder Bay resuming some animal services following COVID-19 pandemic

Thunder Bay’s Licensing and Enforcement Division is set to resume some animal-related services.

The changes involve quicker responses to complaints about loose dogs and cats, and accepting stray animals at the Municipal Kennel

Lost pets taken into care will also be posted on the city’s website to alert their owners that they have been found.

Some of these services were halted during the pandemic, but Municipal Enforcement Services is bringing them back following requests from the public.

“We have heard what the community wants when it comes to working with domestic animals,” said Policy and Research Analyst in Corporate Services, Kristyn Lovato-Day. “This is the first step to providing better service, particularly for animals found running at large.”

There are also plans in place to create a task force with members of the pet community.

The goal of the task force is to hear from animal and pet owners, to make sure the city’s services align with the needs of the community.

Additional changes include enhancements to the Municipal Enforcement Services website, providing more information with what to do when animals are lost or found, and how to deal with wildlife in Thunder Bay.

Municipal Enforcement Services can be reached by calling 807-577-MLEO (6536).
