Thunder Bay releases June road work schedule

The City of Thunder Bay is informing residents of its plans for road maintenance, sewer and stormwater work, sidewalk upgrades, and more going into the summer months.

Some projects will involve road closures, which can be tracked on the city website.

In 2026, the city will be spending about $60 million on infrastructure maintenance and improvements.

The city’s plans for June can be viewed below:

ROAD RECONSTRUCTION

Burwood Road

Starting early June

The northern section of Burwood Road will be closed for sanitary sewer installation. Local traffic can access Burwood from the south.

Dufferin Street (Dixon St to High St)

Starting early June

Road will be fully closed to allow for undergound infrastructure work and resurfacing. Pedestrian access will be available.

College Street (Red River Rd to Hebert St)

Late May start

College Street will be fully closed between Red River Road and Hebert Street to allow for replacement of underground infrastructure and roadway reconstruction. Sidewalk access will remain available.

Cumberland Street (Pearl St to Red River Rd)

Starting early June

Underground infrastructure and streetscape will be fully replaced. The roadway will be fully closed between Pearl Street and Red River Road. Pedestrian access to local businesses along this stretch will be available.

ROAD REHABILITATION

Arthur Street West (Highway 61 to Parkdale Boulevard)

Underway, completion expected mid-June

Traffic lanes will be reduced to allow for asphalt resurfacing. Sidewalks will remain open.

Ottawa Street (Chilton Ave to Morgan Ave)

Underway, completion expected by mid-July

Local access is permitted. Work includes drainage improvements and asphalt resurfacing.

Morgan Avenue (Dead end to Terminal St)

Underway, completion expected by mid-July

Local access is permitted. Work includes drainage improvements and asphalt resurfacing.

Sifton Avenue (Arthur St to Terminal St)

Underway, completion expected by mid-July

Local access is permitted. Work includes drainage improvements and asphalt resurfacing.

Terminal Street (Morgan Ave to Wilroy)

Underway, completion expected by mid-July

Local access is permitted. Work includes asphalt resurfacing.

Terminal Street (Sifton Ave to Chilton Ave)

Underway, completion expected by mid-July

Local access is permitted. Work includes asphalt resurfacing.

Wilroy Avenue (Arthur St to Terminal St)

Underway, completion expected by mid-July

Local access is permitted. Work includes drainage improvements and asphalt resurfacing.

Harbour Expressway (Golf Links Road intersection)

Expected to start early June, anticipated duration 5 days

The Harbour Expressway’s eastbound left turn lane at the Golf Links Road intersection will be closed to allow for the construction of an additional left turn lane.

Golf Links Road (Ridgecrest Road to Innovation Drive)

Underway, completion expected mid-July

Traffic lanes will be reduced to allow for traffic signal installation and lane reconfigurations. Sidewalks and multi-use trails will be closed periodically to allow for traffic signal installation.

Innovation Drive (Golf Links Road to Premier Way)

Underway, completion expected in July

Innovation Drive is closed to allow for road network improvements. During thistime, Innova Park is accessible via Central Avenue and the Harbour Expressway.

High Street (Tupper St to Van Norm St)

Completion expected by mid-June

A final lift of paving will be applied to this section of High Street. The roadway will be closed intermittently to support this work.

SIDEWALK CONSTRUCTION

Cumberland Street (Tupper St to Roundabout)

Underway, completion expected by end of June

Sidewalk and landscaping will be completed. Sidewalks on both sides of Cumberland Street will be closed intermittently for removal. Lane closures may be in place, but through traffic will be permitted.

High Street (Tupper St to Van Norm St)

Completion expected by mid-June

Sidewalk work will be completed, with possible intermittent sidewalk closures.

BRIDGE, CULVERT & STORMWATER

Innova Park Stormwater Management

Underway, completion anticipated in June

A new Stormwater Management Facility is being constructed, including installation of new storm sewers and ditching near the corner of Golf Links Road and the Harbour Expressway.

The public is advised to use caution as construction equipment may be present in the area. Please follow all posted signage and direction from site personnel.

Oliver Road (Oliver Road Community Centre to McBean Street)

Expected to start mid June, anticipated duration of approximately 6 weeks

Oliver Road will be closed between Enniskillen Avenue and Ray Boulevard to allow for storm sewer infrastructure work. Local access will be permitted from Ray Boulevard. A detour will be in place for the duration of the work on Oliver Road, and will be posted to the City’s Construction Project Map.

Sidewalks through this area will be closed.
