Free parking is back in Thunder Bay

After roughly a year of implementing paid parking, the city of Thunder Bay has opted to reverse course, at least in part.

Starting on Tuesday morning, residents can enjoy four hours of complimentary parking with the option to purchase an additional four hours at the marina and waterfront parking lots, including Market Square.

On-street meter parking is also receiving an adjustment, with residents now receiving two hours of complimentary parking, followed by the option to purchase an additional two hours.

Metered parking lots remained unchanged.

The city is encouraging drivers to use the Passport Parking Canada app or a pay machine to register their complimentary parking.

If you are parking at a metered space, then parking enforcement will manually monitor your complimentary parking time.

“Offering complimentary parking will help support local businesses throughout Thunder Bay’s downtown cores, along with the Westfort and Bay and Algoma Business Districts,” said the Commissioner of Corporate Services and City Treasurer, Keri Greaves. “As an added benefit, the program will also provide valuable insights into drivers’ parking habits, which help shape future parking pricing strategies.”

The on-street parking changes are remaining in place until December 31, 2027, while the changes at Marina Park are permanent.

The Passport Parking Canada app can be found in the Google Play or App Store.
