Thunder Bay Hosts Black Lives Matter Protest

With unrest around the world, organizers in Thunder Bay are planning a Black Lives Matter protest this Friday at Waverley Park.

It’s set to get underway at 3 pm in the city’s north downtown core.

On social media, organizers encourage people to acknowledge and use their privilege to amplify black voices.

They say it will be a peaceful protest and that it is hoped it will make a difference.

The organizers’ post on social media goes on to say “as you have seen in the news there is a lot of injustice and corruption within the government and police force in the United States but Canada isn’t innocent either, racism is very much well and alive here among many of our communities. We all need to come together and be present for our black community and acknowledge the systemic oppression within our own government and police force and let it be known we demand to see a change.”

Our radio station will be speaking with organizers about the event this week about their cause.

Organizers are taking physical distancing and other COVID-19 rules into account when hosting the event. They are asking participants to wear masks, use hand sanitizer and keep distance from each other.

Across the world a number of protests have been held in support of the cause following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
