A busy weekend for Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, as they extinguished two fires in the city.
No injuries were reported.
The first fire was located in a garage on Melvin Avenue.
When crews arrived, they found the building filled with heavy smoke, but they were able to put out the fire before it spread to neighbouring properties.
The homeowner was out of town during the fire, but a neighbour noticed and contacted emergency services, saving the building.
Fire rescue received reports of a second fire after finishing up at the first scene.
Crews responded to a row housing unit on Limbrick Street after receiving the reports.
When they arrived, they found flames coming through the windows of the home.
A search of the building found no residents, and it was later confirmed that the unit is vacant.
However, during the search, firefighters discovered a young stray cat sheltering inside.
The cat was rescued, treated on scene for smoke inhalation by firefighters, and is expected to recover.
The building sustained significant damage, but the response from fire rescue stopped the fire from spreading to neighbouring units.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Fire rescue is reminding residents of the importance of quickly reporting signs of smoke.
Early calls can make a significant difference in preventing property damage and loss of life.
