Thunder Bay Accepts Fire Evacuees

The first evacuees to arrive in Thunder Bay from the forest fires affecting Pikangikum First Nation are at the Valhalla Inn.

This is the second time within a month, and it’s something Richard Kehrig, the sales manager of Kasper Transportation, isn’t surprised with.

“No, we’re not surprised, living in the north, it’s something you hope never happens, but you have to be prepared for it.”

The Transportation company was hired to take the roughly 200 evacuees from the airport to area hotels last night, after 2 Hercules planes landed.

Kehrig adds people arriving in Thunder Bay are very grateful to this city.

“The evacuees that I spoke to were very grateful, with the friendliness that people have in Thunder Bay. And the willingness to help, very often businesses go out of their way to assist families in need.”

As for the forest fire situation, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry tells us there weren’t any new fires as of yesterday, with the total standing now at 19 across the region.

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
