The annual POPPY campaign started over the weekend. Every year, millions of Canadians wear a poppy – a visual pledge to honor Canada’s veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today.
Make sure to get yours today. Available at most corner stores / grocery stores around the city. Funds support Veterans and their families.
You may or may not know the history on how the POPPY became the symbol of Remembrance. The idea came from a teacher, lecturer and fundraiser named Madame Anna Guerin. She was inspired by the poem – “In Flanders Fields”. She created poppies made from fabric to raise funds. She presented the idea of the poppy for Remembrance Day at a meeting held in the summer of 1921 which included The Royal Canadian Legion and the Great War Veterans Association. Do you know where that meeting was held? Right here in Thunder Bay – which at the time was known as Port Arthur. The official plaque is on display at the Prince Arthur Hotel.
Please consider wearing a POPPY. Thanks!
