After months of bargaining and rotating strikes, one of Ontario’s unions representing education workers has a tentative deal with the provincial government.
Details of the Ontario Council of Education Workers’ contract have not been revealed.
The President of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, Warren Thomas, says “We were able to make improvements for our members, and though exceedingly difficult, the tentative deal was achieved under the cloud of both Bill 124 and in the midst of a deadly pandemic. A charter challenge remains intact contesting the legality of that bill.”
Bargaining started in September, and resumed via video conferencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic March 30th.
OPSEU represents roughly 6,500 full and part time members, while the Ontario Council of Education Workers is there for about 7,000 people working in Public and Catholic school boards. That includes educational assistants, office and clerical, child and youth workers, interpreters, and many others.
