The Lakehead Public School Board will not have to lay off high school teachers this year since 14 teachers will be retiring.
Rich Seeley of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation notes, while the retired teachers will not be replaced, the jobs of the remaining 280 full and part time teachers will not be cut.
Seeley claims the move also comes with a price, explaining 16 people who lost their teaching jobs in years previous, have been waiting in the wings for up to ten years so they could replace those retiring teachers.
However, the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board was not able to avoid layoffs.
Carlo Cappello of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association tells us there are three high school teachers getting notice they will not be back next year.
Cappello says that is the first time in twenty years that has happened.
