TBay Correctional Workers Refuse Unsafe Work

Correctional workers in Thunder Bay say their expected to work like police without firearms.

More than 600 officers across the province are being ordered by the ministry to work with inmates without their safety gear, since their certification to carry personal protective equipment expired.

Local union president Mike Lundy says officers inside the Thunder Bay Jail are now facing repercussions for expressing concern over their safety, noting one officer has been suspended, and the union is pending four more suspensions.

Lundy says officers need proper training before they can resume regular duties.

He adds this is a health and safety issue that shouldn’t be affected by negotiations to bargain a new corrections contract.

Lundy notes officers are still reporting to the jail, but many are refusing to work with inmates without their safety gear. (Photo: Caryn Ceolin)
