Who Owes Taxes In Thunder Bay?

A staggering amount of business and residential taxes are owed to the City of Thunder Bay.

On Monday night, city council will hear about the very lengthy list on a bill that totals almost $4.4 million in 2019 alone.

Topping the list is the Delta Marriott Hotel on the waterfront, which owes over $865,000. The hotel has not been able to fully operate since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

The property at 550 Shipyard Drive owes over $852,000.

The tax arrears are for a period owed more than two years.

  • Dating back to 2012, the city is owed $22.6 million in outstanding back taxes
  • Non-residential properties total $2.4 million
  • Residential properties owe $1.9 million

The money represents two per cent of the tax levy and is an increase of $1.9 million over the 2018 total.
