Take me out to the ballgame: Why Border Cats baseball belongs on your summer bucket list

Take me out to the ballgame! That’s right, you heard it. A key element of summer has officially returned to Thunder Bay… baseball season.

Last Friday, we headed to the home opener for the Border Cats, and honestly? It was the perfect way to celebrate our pal Holly’s birthday. Sunshine, baseball, hot dogs, cold drinks, good friends, and an excuse to stay out a little later than you probably should on a work night. What more could you ask for?

And here’s the best part: for about $20 plus tax, you’ve got yourself a pretty rad night out. Let’s start with the obvious.

  • Who doesn’t love an excuse for a hot dog?
  • Or a cold beer?
  • Dinner? Handled.
  • Treat? Acquired.
  • Budget? Still intact.

In today’s world where it sometimes feels like you need to take out a small loan to leave your house, a Border Cats game is one of those rare outings that still feels affordable, fun, and worth every penny.

Then there’s the social aspect. A baseball game is basically permission to gather your favourite people in one place and spend a few hours doing what friends do best: laughing, telling stories, making questionable predictions about the game, throwing cheap shots at each other, and creating memories you’ll reference for the next six months.

And here’s something I didn’t know until recently—you can actually book group outings through the Border Cats. They have packages that include seating, food, atmosphere, and even catering options from Salt and Pepper.

Excuse me? You’re telling me I can organize a gathering without having to clean my house first? Sold.

Whether it’s a birthday, staff outing, family gathering, client appreciation event, or simply a group of friends looking for an excuse to get together, this might be one of the easiest summer plans you’ll ever make.

But my favourite part of the evening wasn’t the hot dogs. Or the beer. Or even the baseball. It was the community.

There’s something magical about Thunder Bay that happens when people gather around local events. You show up expecting to see the people you came with and somehow end up running into twenty more. People you haven’t seen in years. Old classmates. Past coworkers. Friends of friends. That one person you’ve been meaning to call for six months.

A Border Cats game somehow turns into a giant community reunion where everyone is just happy to be outside enjoying summer together. And that’s why supporting things like this matters. It’s easy to talk about wanting a vibrant community, wanting things to do, wanting events that bring people together. But those things only exist when we show up.

Buying a ticket isn’t just buying a ticket. It’s supporting local entertainment. It’s supporting young athletes. It’s supporting jobs. It’s supporting a summer tradition that gives our city something to rally around. And honestly, that’s pretty cool.

Now, let’s address the actual baseball. If you’re like me, your athletic talents are best displayed from the stands. I consider myself an elite-level cheerer. A professional snacker. An Olympic-calibre clapper. Am I making any plays on the field? Absolutely not. But can I enthusiastically yell “LET’S GO!” while holding a hot dog and spilling mustard on myself? Without question.

That’s my moment. And speaking of snacks, they’ve somehow made game day even better this year. They now offer in-seat service. That’s right. You don’t even have to leave your seat. You can sit back, enjoy the game, grab a cold drink, order some snacks, and fully embrace your role as a professional spectator. No missing a big play because you’re standing in line. No awkward sprint back to your seat balancing three drinks and a basket of fries. Just baseball, snacks, and summer. The way it was meant to be.

Oh, and the cherry on top? Fireworks. Not just a couple little sparkly pops in the sky that make you politely clap and head home. I’m talking some seriously cool fireworks that lit up the night and had the entire crowd looking up like little kids on Christmas morning.

It was the perfect ending to an already incredible evening. Good friends, great food, baseball, community, and a sky full of fireworks? That’s pretty hard to beat.

And to make the night even sweeter, the Border Cats pulled off the win. That’s right—the home team won. Yay sports!

Now, I can’t tell you exactly what happened on the field because, as previously mentioned, my talents are primarily focused on cheering, snacking, and socializing. But I do know that everyone around us was excited, people were high-fiving strangers, and the hometown victory made the fireworks feel even more celebratory.

A perfect opening night if you ask me.

If you’re not sure when the next game is, seriously, check out their schedule. Print it off. Stick it on your fridge. Circle some dates. Plan a group outing. Pick a themed night (Catch me at the 90s Night pretending I’m not excited while secretly planning an outfit weeks in advance.)

Make it a tradition. Because before we know it, summer will be gone, the leaves will change, and we’ll all be wondering where the time went. So grab your friends, grab a hot dog, grab a cold drink, root, root, root for the home team. Support the things that make Thunder Bay feel like Thunder Bay. I’ll save you a seat in the stands!

  • How I’m Manifesting Fun (and Magic) Into My Everyday Life - I turned 29 this year, and somewhere between the birthday cake and a late-night chat with a friend, it hit me: I don’t want life to just happen to me — I want to co-create it. Not just the big stuff, like career or relationships. I’m talking about the fun. The sparkle. The moments that make people look at you and say, “You’re glowing.”  So, I made a quiet little pact with myself: I’m going to manifest more fun. Not the wild, expensive kind (although never say no to a plane ticket) — but the kind that makes life feel rich, full, and intentionally joyful. The kind that makes you text your friends, “Can we please do that again?”
